Gum Recession – Treatment in Burton on Trent

The effect on our smile and other dental problems.

One dental issue that some of us may not notice initially, as it often happens quite slowly, is that of  receding gums. This is not uncommon and tends to occur as we grow older. Whilst there might be outside factors, such as genetics, which influence this, it very often happens through the way that we look after our teeth and gums, or, more precisely, how we don’t!

Once our gums recede, it can have an effect on the way that our teeth look, but can also increase the risk of other dental problems too.

Long in the tooth

You may have heard the saying ‘long in the tooth’, meaning someone who has lived for a long time. Because gum recession is more common in older people, it can make the teeth look much longer as the receding gums expose the part of the tooth usually hidden beneath the gums. This is one of the most obvious effects then, a smile that shows a set of teeth that are longer than usual. This can give an almost ‘horse like’ appearance in some patients.

There are two likely causes of receding gums and our team at Mike Allen’s Dental Practice, offer their thoughts on these below.

Gum disease

One of the most common causes of receding gums is that of gingivitis and periodontitis. These gum damaging diseases can create a whole host of problems for our patients from Burton Upon Trent. From mildly sore and bleeding gums, through to bone loss and potential tooth loss, gum disease is not something to be ignored.

Thankfully, gum disease is relatively straightforward to prevent and good home care and professional cleaning by an oral hygienist should be enough to keep your gums in good health. Even when gingivitis occurs, taking the simple action of a hygienist appointment and better care at home can usually reverse the problem. It should be noted that whilst periodontitis can also be treated, this is a much more invasive treatment and is not a guaranteed success. Prevention is the key here.

Excessive brushing

It sometimes comes as a surprise to some of our Burton patients when we have to tell them that they have been a little too enthusiastic when cleaning their teeth. With the best of intentions, some people brush their teeth much harder than necessary in order to keep their teeth clean. Whilst the intentions are good, not only does this often result in the enamel on our teeth becoming worn, but can also cause gums to recede.

Receding gums not only mean a ‘toothier’ smile, but also exposes the less well protected root part of the tooth. This increases the risk of problems such as decay and root canal infections. If you use a manual toothbrush, try not to put too much pressure on when brushing; a gentle circular motion is all that is necessary. You may wish to invest in an electric toothbrush. Do check that it has a pressure sensor though as these will cut out if you press too hard, helping you to avoid the associated problems.
