Mind the Gap

Cosmetic dentistry to close gaps between the teeth for our Burton patients.

Having a gap between the teeth can detract from your smile. Naturally, when the gap is caused by the loss of a tooth, this needs to be corrected with the use of a dental implant or bridge to replace it.

What though, of those smaller gaps which can still detract from your appearance?

Diastema

Let’s start with one of the most ‘iconic’ gaps; the diastema. Whilst this refers to a gap between any two teeth, it is widely used to indicate a gap between the two front teeth, usually at the top.

This particular gap seems to have gained a reputation for being ‘alluring’ and, indeed, some models such as Kate Moss have embraced theirs.

Whether people find this gap attractive or not though is a personal choice, but, from a dental perspective, we know that it can lead to problems with other teeth around it.

Where there is a gap in the teeth, there is room for other teeth to move into it. When this occurs, it can, over a period of time, cause teeth to become crooked and uneven. Not only is this unsightly but can make cleaning the teeth more difficult and may result in incidences of decay as well as worn teeth.

Solutions

At Mike Allen’s Dental Practice in Burton on Trent, we have a number of treatments available to close gaps in the teeth. Which of these is used will depend on each individual circumstance.

For very mild cases, the edge of the teeth where the gap is can be built up using a composite material. This is a simple procedure which requires no local anaesthetic. This procedure is generally not recommended for anything other than small gaps though.

Dental veneers

Although unsuitable for use on the rear teeth, dental veneers can play a role in closing gaps between teeth. In fact, these are ideally suitable for gaps between the front teeth providing the gap is not too large.

This is an effective method, where it can be used, and is also helpful in covering any tiny chips and cracks that may also be visible.

Orthodontics

Where the gaps between teeth are more significant, orthodontics (“braces”) are likely to be the preferred option to correct this. With many choices of modern adult braces now available; not only can the gaps be closed efficiently but without the high visibility of traditional dental braces.

If you have gaps between your teeth which cause you concern; please call Mike Allen’s Burton on Trent dental practice and arrange a consultation where we will examine and discuss the appropriate options for you.
