Treat Yourself To A ‘Selfie’ Smile Makeover

Great looking smiles with the latest cosmetic dentistry in Burton

The word ‘selfie’ is probably talked about less than it used to be but is still a part of everyday life for many people, especially perhaps, the younger generation. Whether you are sending them to a friend, adding them on a dating site or simply posting them on social media, you will naturally want to make your smile look as warm and attractive as possible.

Although some of us will already have a great looking smile, there will also be a large number of folk thinking that they would have a great looking smile too if it weren’t for that crooked tooth, the fact that they are discoloured or even if it wasn’t for those cracks that have appeared recently. Even a relatively small flaw with your teeth can spoil what would otherwise be a great smile. If this is the case for you, you might wish to consider some of the cosmetic dental treatments that we have available at your Burton dentist.

A whiter, brighter smile

The most obvious thing that you can do to improve your smile is to have whiter looking teeth. Many of us have teeth that are discoloured to varying degrees, either due to dietary habits such as consuming too much tea or through the natural ageing process which causes our teeth to become duller over time. For most of us, this can be rectified in a straightforward manner using a non-invasive cosmetic treatment called teeth whitening.

Prior to your treatment you will be given a full oral health check. There is little point in having whiter teeth if you have gum disease or some of your teeth need filling. Any issues like these will be treated first and then your teeth whitening treatment can begin.

We will discuss with you, the level of whiteness you require and the procedure will be adjusted accordingly. Impressions will be taken of your teeth and these will be used by a special laboratory to produce the trays which will fit over your teeth. These usually take a week or so to arrive and you will then be given instructions on their use along with the appropriate whitening gel. Generally, these trays will need to be worn at home for a few hours a day with initial results being noticeable at around one week and the full effect appearing approximately a week later. This treatment can be repeated without any harm to your teeth and gums.

Hide those cracks

As we get older and the enamel on our teeth starts to weaken a little, cracks can appear on the surface. Although often harmless and not compromising the health of the tooth, they can spoil their appearance. Even whitening the teeth will not resolve this problem and many patients of Mike Allen’s Dental Practice have chosen to have porcelain dental veneers fitted to correct this problem. Veneers may also be used when teeth are chipped and also where heavy staining is present and which would not be sufficiently improved with teeth whitening.

In most cases, the fitting of teeth veneers will require some dental surgery. In order to give a natural appearance, it will usually be necessary to remove an equivalent thickness of the affected enamel from the front surface of your teeth. This will be gently shaved away using a tool called a burr. Impressions will then be taken and these will be used to manufacture your veneers. Temporary veneers will be fitted to protect your teeth in the meantime.

Once prepared, your temporary veneers will be removed and the final ones attached using a strong dental adhesive. Finally, the veneers will be trimmed and polished to leave them looking both attractive and natural.

Change that crooked smile!

One of the more time consuming cosmetic dentistry treatments is that of straightening crooked teeth. These can differ in severity and the time needed to correct them will differ accordingly. For more severely crooked teeth, it can take a year or more of wearing braces to correct them – this is because you could damage the teeth by applying too much pressure to them too quickly. In many cases though, it may be a lesser problem and only slight adjustments needed. An example of this would be if two teeth overlap slightly. This might not be enough to cause a major problem but can still spoil a selfie, especially when it is a close up of your smile.

There are now a number of types of teeth braces that are not only discreet and tooth coloured whilst being worn, but can correct minor crookedness such as this in just a few weeks. You will need to have a consultation with one of the cosmetic dentists at our Burton Practice to determine which treatment you will need and we’ll be pleased to identify just the right treatment for you.
