Cosmetic Dental Procedures – Orthodontics

Straighter teeth are more likely to be healthy as well as more attractive.

Do you have teeth that are crooked, perhaps even overlapping other teeth? If so, you may be putting the health of your teeth at risk  as well as having a smile that is not as attractive as it could be.

In the past, to correct this relatively common problem, metallic dental braces would have been used, and, perhaps understandably, many people may have decided not to have these, living with crooked teeth as a consequence. At Mike Allen’s Dental Practice in Burton On Trent, we are pleased to offer a solution to this problem that avoids the visibility of traditional metal dental braces.

‘Invisible’ orthodontics

There is now a wide range of ‘invisible braces’ available that straighten teeth in a discreet and more comfortable manner. The specific system to be used used will be determined following a consultation as many perform specific roles. For example, some orthodontics can be used to correct rear teeth that are crooked, whilst others offer a faster acting solution for where a simpler, aesthetic correction of the front teeth is needed.

There are essentially two types of modern orthodontics that are available; the first uses the traditional approach of wires and brackets, but, instead of metal, tooth coloured materials are used which offer a higher level of discretion as well as comfort. The other type involves a series of transparent plastic trays which fit directly over the teeth and are designed to be removed when eating or for cleaning the teeth. Both types of braces are available at our Burton practice.

Why bother?

There are two main benefits to straighter teeth. The first is obvious and that is to improve the appearance and it is probably this reason which attracts most patients to the procedure. The other consideration though is that teeth that are tightly packed, or even overlap, are extremely difficult to keep clean.

Whilst your toothbrush, and perhaps even dental floss, may not be able to get into these tight spaces, you can be sure that the microscopic bacteria that cause tooth decay will. This may lead to a filling being needed, or even possibly an extraction should the decay become extensive enough.
